The Challenge

A logistics organisation operating across three locations in Qatar — a head office in Doha and two warehouse and distribution facilities — was experiencing significant operational issues related to its ageing network infrastructure.

The head office relied on a single MPLS WAN circuit for connectivity between sites, resulting in high monthly costs and a single point of failure. The two warehouse facilities had basic Wi-Fi infrastructure deployed several years earlier that could no longer reliably support the growing number of Wi-Fi-dependent devices — including handheld barcode scanners, mobile computers, and operational tablets used by logistics staff.

A planned expansion of the organisation's warehouse management system (WMS) — which would require reliable, low-latency wireless connectivity across both facilities — made the infrastructure upgrade urgent.

Our Approach

Noventrix Systems conducted a full network assessment across all three locations, including wireless site surveys at both warehouse facilities to map existing coverage, identify dead zones, and quantify the device density requirements for the new WMS deployment.

The assessment confirmed that the existing network architecture — including both the WAN connectivity model and the wireless infrastructure at the warehouses — was insufficient to support the planned WMS expansion. A complete redesign was recommended and approved.

What We Deployed

  • SD-WAN Platform: Replaced the MPLS-only WAN with an SD-WAN overlay solution providing intelligent traffic management across multiple WAN links — including a primary fibre circuit and a secondary 4G/LTE backup link at each location. This eliminated the single point of failure and reduced monthly WAN circuit costs.
  • Core Switching Infrastructure: Replaced legacy core and distribution switches at the head office with a modern hierarchical switching architecture supporting PoE+ for IP telephony and wireless access points, and providing the VLAN segmentation required for the new network design.
  • Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Infrastructure: Designed and deployed a new Wi-Fi 6 wireless network across both warehouse facilities. 34 Wi-Fi 6 access points were installed across approximately 18,000 square metres of combined warehouse floor space, configured for high-density device environments and optimised for the response time requirements of the WMS application.
  • Network Access Control (NAC): Deployed NAC with 802.1X authentication across both warehouse facilities, ensuring that only authenticated and policy-compliant devices could connect to the operational network — separating warehouse device traffic from the corporate network.
  • Structured Cabling: Installed CAT6A structured cabling throughout both warehouse facilities, replacing legacy CAT5e runs that were inadequate for the new access point density. Fibre optic inter-building links were installed between the main distribution frame and secondary distribution frames in each facility.
  • Network Monitoring: Deployed centralised network performance monitoring across all three sites, providing the internal IT team with visibility into WAN performance, device connectivity status, and access point health.

The Outcome

The project was completed within the agreed 10-week timeline. Both warehouse facilities were cut over to the new network in planned overnight maintenance windows with no operational disruption.

  • WAN reliability improved significantly — the dual-link SD-WAN architecture eliminated the single point of failure that had previously caused periodic connectivity outages between the head office and warehouse locations.
  • Monthly WAN circuit costs were reduced by consolidating the MPLS circuit to a lower-bandwidth primary link supplemented by lower-cost secondary connectivity.
  • Wi-Fi performance across both warehouse facilities was transformed — the new Wi-Fi 6 infrastructure supported the WMS deployment launch without wireless-related performance issues.
  • The new NAC deployment gave the IT team full visibility and control over which devices were connecting to the operational network at each warehouse — a significant security and compliance improvement.
  • The organisation subsequently expanded its WMS deployment ahead of the original schedule, citing network performance as a key enabler.
